With Joshua Landy (Comparative Literature, French), I have been instrumental in developing the program in Philosophy and Literature at Stanford, and we are currently collaborating in that area. I was educated at Yale (A.B., 1987) and the University of Pennsylvania (Ph.D., 1993), where I worked closely with Alexander Nehamas, Gary Hatfield, and Paul Guyer.

Although some have attempted to link his philosophy with Max Stirner's radical individualism, it is first of all unlikely that Nietzsche read The Ego and Its Own (1844), and secondly it appears that Nietzsche's ignorance of Stirner lead him to incorrectly relate Stirner to Schopenhauer, to whom Nietzsche directly opposed himself. Nietzsche's philosophy, summed up here in one sentence, may sound foreign to anyone who cannot entertain the concept of destiny. But as a classical philologist, Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher of the 19th century. Nietzsche must have felt that the western culture had put less and less significance on artistic creativity and passion that mental and spiritual power which create beauty in life have fewer and fewer places in the modern society.
